The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rantan Ward, Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State, Alhaji Garba Buba, has been killed by suspected bandits during an attack on the community.
Buba was reportedly shot alongside two other residents when armed assailants invaded Rantan community on Sunday night.
According to residents, Buba sustained gunshot injuries during the attack and was rushed to a hospital, where he later died while receiving treatment.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attackers stormed the community at night and opened fire on residents.
“Last night, Sunday, suspected kidnappers attacked our town, Rantan. During the attack, they shot Alhaji Garba Buba, the APC chairman of Rantan Ward, who later died in hospital from the injuries sustained,” the resident was quoted as saying.
The source added that another resident, identified as Alhaji Sa’adu, was also shot during the assault, while Sulaiman Zunduma was killed.
Buba’s death was also confirmed by a family member, Hafsat Garba Rantan, who described the deceased as her paternal uncle.
The latest attack came barely hours after gunmen invaded Chiromawa community in Garun Malam Local Government Area of Kano State, where they reportedly abducted the Sarkin Noman Jihar Kano, Alhaji Yusuf Nadabo Chiromawa.
Three people were said to have been killed during the attack, which occurred at about 11 p.m. on Saturday.
The attacks have heightened concerns over the security situation in parts of Kano State, particularly communities in Kano North bordering Katsina and Zamfara states, which have recently witnessed increasing incidents of banditry.
Residents in the affected areas are said to be living in fear as armed groups continue to target communities.
In another incident, police foiled a kidnapping attempt and rescued a community leader in the Garun Mallam Local Government Area of Kano State.
The police spokesperson in Kano, Haruna Kiyawa, in a statement, said the incident occurred on Saturday around 11:30 p.m. when suspected bandits invaded Garun Mallam town, shooting sporadically into the air to create panic.
Meanwhile, tragedy has also struck Tudunwada Local Government Area of Kano State, where three sisters reportedly drowned after a boat conveying them capsized at Tiga Dam.
The incident occurred at about 2 p.m. on Saturday, according to relatives of the victims.
According to reports, the deceased were Murjanatu, Atikatu and Bilkisu, popularly known as Amira. They were reportedly residents of Yalwan Rugu-Rugu community in Tudunwada.
The Chairman of Tudunwada Local Government Area and Kano State Chairperson of the Association of Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria (ALGON), Hajiya Sa’adatu Salisu Soja, confirmed the incident and expressed condolences to the victims’ families and the community.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and the people of Yalwan Rugu-Rugu over this painful incident,” she said
Salisu Soja prayed for the repose of the victims’ souls and asked Allah to grant their relatives the strength to bear the loss.
“May Allah forgive them, have mercy on them and grant their families the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” she added.
The circumstances surrounding the boat accident remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.
