What Is the Premier League?

Before we get into the history and other facts we first need to start by understanding what the Premier League is. The Premier League is a top-level English Football League system. This is why the league is normally referenced as the English Premier League or, in its shortened version, the EPL.

The Premier League operates on a system of promotion and relegation and works hand in hand with the English Football League. The Premier League consists of 20 football teams. They have seasons that run from August to May and each team will make 38 appearances. Yes, during these times we will be placing our bets on and focusing on premier league betting at 10bet.

The History of the Premier League

Let’s take a little peek into the history of the Premier League.

The Premier League was established in 1992. At the time the Premier League was founded by the FA Premier League, which comes to us as no surprise. The decision to create the Premier League was based on the fact that a lot of clubs at the time in the Football League First Division or FLFA decided to form a breakaway competition separate from the Football League. The decision came about after a deal was placed on the table. It was and still is a television rights sale which has proven to be extremely lucrative to Sky.

Sky is formally known as Sky UK Limited. The British Broadcaster and general telecommunications outfit provide many services. These services include television and broadband internet services. It also provides fixed-line and mobile telephone services to businesses and people that live within the UK.

It’s important to know that the entire idea behind the Premier League was based on trying to create more money for football. So at the end of the 1990-1991 season, a proposal was made. Within this table, it was established that a new league needed to be created.

So it was that the Founder Members Agreement document was signed on the 17th July 1991. It was signed by football’s top-flight clubs. This agreement was also used to establish the basic principles of how the FA Premier League.

This was a very smart move because it also meant that the Premier League was now able to negotiate its own broadcast and sponsorship agreements. It wasn’t just about the money but was also aimed at affording English football the opportunity to play with teams across Europe.

At the time there was a bid happening for the broadcasting rights. The bidding was taking place between Dyke and ITV, LWT was also part of the bid however they lost out because BSkyB won the bid with a whopping bid of £304 million over five years. BBC was awarded a highlights package where they were able to broadcast on the Match of the day.

Teams such as Arsenal, Manchester United, Aston Villa, Norwich City, and Chelsea just to name a few were also part of the 22 inaugural members of the New Premier League.

The League was finally able to have its first season in 1992-93 and was composed of the 22 clubs which were later reduced to 20 in the 1995-96 season. The first goal of the season was scored by Brian Dean who at the time was with Sheffield United. It was an epic 2-1 win against Manchester United.

The Change That the 2000s Brought to the Premier League

The new decade also brought with it change in the Premier League called the Top Four dominance. The top four were about four teams that finished top four for the bulk of the decade. Being part of the top four for the season meant that the top four teams would instantly qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

The top four teams were Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Liverpool. At the time there were only four other clubs that managed to be part of the competition which were Leeds United which qualified in 2000-01, Newcastle United which qualified in 2001-02 and 2002-03, Everton which qualified in 2004-05 and Tottenham Hotspur in 2009-10.

Conclusion

The creation of the Premier League was introduced to assist English football and generate more money. It was a different approach that saw a change in English football and football in general. The formation of the Premier League was a calculated move that was taken to help showcase football but on the terms of the league.
