Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, plans to commit one-third of his estimated $36.5 billion fortune to philanthropic causes, making it the largest charitable commitment ever made by an African billionaire.
The pledge, backed by members of the Dangote family, is expected to channel more than $12 billion into the Aliko Dangote Foundation over time, significantly expanding its efforts to address critical development challenges across Africa.
According to a Bloomberg report, Halima Dangote, Executive Director at Dangote Industries and daughter of the billionaire industrialist, confirmed that the family supports the decision to dedicate a substantial portion of Dangote’s wealth to long-term charitable initiatives.
The commitment represents a landmark moment in African wealth management and succession planning and shows a deliberate effort to institutionalize philanthropy as a core part of the Dangote legacy.
Established to improve lives across Sub-Saharan Africa, the Aliko Dangote Foundation focuses on healthcare, education, economic empowerment and humanitarian assistance.
The additional funding is expected to strengthen programs aimed at reducing child mortality, combating malnutrition, improving access to quality education and expanding vocational training across the continent.
The announcement comes as Dangote’s net worth has climbed to record levels, driven largely by the operational expansion of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, continued strength in Dangote Cement, and growing investments in agriculture.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, his wealth has increased by more than $6.5 billion this year, placing him among the world’s 65 richest individuals.
The move also reflects a growing trend among ultra-high-net-worth individuals to formalize philanthropic giving through institutional structures designed to create lasting social impact.
By committing a significant share of his fortune to the foundation, Dangote joins a select group of global business leaders who have chosen to dedicate substantial personal wealth to addressing long-term development challenges.
The initiative is expected to reinforce the foundation’s role as one of Africa’s leading philanthropic organizations and expand its capacity to support sustainable economic and social development across the continent.
