A North African man armed with a machete has killed one person and injured four others in attacks on several churches in Algeciras. The attack took place around 7:30 p.m. this Wednesday and is being investigated by the National Court as a case of terrorism. According to legal sources cited by Efe, the attacker would have shouted “Allah!”.
According to Europa Sur, the deceased is Diego Valencia, sacristan of the church of La Palma. The images show his body covered by a thermal blanket in the Plaza Alta in Algeciras.
In addition, one of the wounded is Antonio Rodríguez, parish priest of the San Isidro chapel, who was stabbed and has undergone surgery at the hospital, although fortunately he does not fear for his life.
According to information provided by the Ministry of the Interior, the attack began after 7:00 p.m., when the terrorist entered the Church of San Isidro armed with a machete and attacked the priest, leaving him seriously injured. It was there that he would have also caused three other injuries.
He then went to the church of Nuestra Señora de la Palma, about five minutes from the previous one. There he caused various damage by throwing images, crosses and candles to the ground and also attacked the sacristan, who managed to leave the church, but was hit outside by the assailant, who hit him on the head with a machete after wounding him in the abdomen, according to the eyewitnesses cited by Europa Sur.
Sources of the investigation have assured that the attacker is Yasin Kanza, of Moroccan nationality and about 40 years old. He has been arrested and is in police custody. The police have distributed a video with images of the attacker inside a police station.
The National Court has opened an investigation for an alleged terrorist attack. The investigation has fallen to the Central Court of Instruction Number 6, which is the one that was on duty.
