The internet is currently buzzing with the surprising resignation of the most recent UK minister, Liz Truss after 6 weeks of chaotic reign. This has made her the shortest-serving prime minister in the history of the United Kingdom. However, it will be interesting to note that though Liz Truss’ tenure was recorded as the briefest, she isn’t the only politician to step down within a few months of inauguration.

Out of the 56 people who had held the prime mister position in Britain, about 8 of them served less than a year. In this article, I’ll like to introduce you to some British prime ministers who have the shortest serving time(all less than 12 months) and why they had to step down.

1. Liz Truss

She was a powerful politician who resigned from office after 44 days of being in office. She stepped down from office after she resigned from her post due to political chaos during her time of governance

2. George Canning

Ex-prime minister, George Canning spent just 119 days in office. His tenure was cut short by death at the age of 57 possibly due to pneumonia or tuberculosis on the 8th of August, 1827.

3. Viscount Goderich

He spent just 143 days in office as the prime minister of the UK. He succeeded Canning but resigned in his fifth month in January 1828 when he could not handle the turbulent coalition.

4. Andrew Bonar Law

Andrew was coerced to step down through resignation in May 1923 after 209 days in office. He, unfortunately, has throat cancer which was in its advanced state which made it hard for him to speak in parliament. He gave up the ghost about 6 months after his resignation
