CCTV footage released during the investigation captured the moments leading up to the tragedy. The recording showed Renata walking through the hotel’s hallway with her boyfriend before she leaned against the window and fell.
According to police chief George Marques, who is overseeing the investigation for the state’s Homicide and Personal Protection Unit, the couple had been drinking during a night out and appeared intoxicated.
Explaining what investigators observed in the footage, Marques said there was no indication that Renata had been pushed or physically assaulted by her boyfriend.
“Her partner was questioned and released.
“We can clearly see there was no type of aggression, there was no push, he wasn’t even near her.”
He added that the available footage supported the conclusion that the fall was accidental. Her boyfriend, identified as Leonardo Augusto Pinto França, has not been named as a suspect, although investigators may invite him back for further questioning.
França reportedly told police that he could not remember the moment Renata fell.
The couple, who were from Ananindeua, Brazil, had been staying at the hotel since October 28 to attend a poker tournament. They were scheduled to return home on November 3.
Meanwhile, Maranhão’s Public Security Secretariat confirmed that forensic specialists had inspected the hotel and examined the window structure as part of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities are still conducting tests to determine what caused the window panel to detach and whether there were any structural defects.
In a statement, the secretariat said the examinations were carried out “to establish the circumstances of the fall” and would form part of the Civil Police investigation.
The Rio Poty Hotel also expressed sadness over Renata’s death, extended its condolences to her family and friends and confirmed that it was cooperating with the authorities.
However, when asked about the hotel’s windows, management declined to provide further comments.
Renata, who studied business administration, leaves behind two young children.
Her body was flown back to Belém on Wednesday, where her mother, Betty Negrão, expressed her heartbreak over the loss of her daughter.
“My daughter went out to enjoy herself and I am receiving her in a coffin.
“I hope for justice.”
Her mother’s statement comes as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the fatal fall.
