Visa status: US detains former Ghana finance minister

Kenneth Ofori-Atta, a former finance minister of Ghana, has been detained by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The development was disclosed in a statement by Ofori-Atta’s legal team on Wednesday.

His lawyers said the detention is connected to a pending petition concerning the status of his stay in the United States.

“The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as of yesterday, detained the former Minister for Finance, Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, regarding the status of his current stay in the United States,” the statement reads.

They added that efforts were underway to resolve the matter promptly.

“His US legal team is in contact with ICE and expects the matter to be resolved expeditiously.”

Ofori-Atta is reported to have remained in the US for more than a year while receiving medical treatment.

An online ICE detainee locator showed that he is currently being held at the Caroline detention facility.

In February 2025, Ghanaian authorities declared Ofori-Atta wanted after he failed to honour invitations related to corruption allegations.

The Ghanaian government later filed formal corruption charges against him and six others in November 2025.

In December 2025, authorities in Ghana requested his extradition from the United States.

Ofori-Atta served as Ghana’s finance minister between 2017 and 2024 during the administration of Nana Akufo-Addo, former president of the country.
