A Nigerian man has shared the heartwarming gesture of a landlord who refused to collect his neighbour’s rent after he had spent nine years living in the compound.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), the man revealed that his neighbour’s rent expired last month, prompting him to visit the landlord to make payment for another year.
However, the landlord asked him what had kept him comfortable in the compound for so long.
The neighbour replied that it was the “peace of mind” he enjoyed while living there.
The landlord then asked if he had acquired any land, but the neighbour revealed that he had not and was only working towards buying one.
The landlord advised him to use the money meant for another year’s rent to pursue his dream of owning property.
“Don’t work towards it. Use this rent for the tenth year to buy the land. Then come and show me the receipt and documents,” he wrote.
According to the narrator, the neighbour took the landlord’s advice and bought his first piece of land yesterday.
The unexpected gesture has drawn attention online, with many people praising the landlord for prioritising his tenant’s long-term goal of becoming a property owner.
