US Mission: We’ll deny corrupt Nigerian officials visas

The United States Mission in Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to global anti-corruption initiatives, declaring that individuals involved in corrupt acts may be denied entry into the United States.

This position was made public through a post on the Mission’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday.

“Fighting corruption knows no borders or limits on accountability. Even when high-profile individuals engage in corruption, they can be barred from receiving US visas,” the statement read.

This announcement aligns with previous actions taken by the U.S. government in response to political misconduct in Nigeria.

In May 2023, the United States disclosed that it had initiated visa restrictions against individuals who interfered with the country’s general elections.

A statement published on the U.S. State Department’s website at the time quoted Secretary of State Antony Blinken as saying:

“The United States is committed to supporting and advancing democracy in Nigeria and around the world. Today, I am announcing that we have taken steps to impose visa restrictions on specific individuals in Nigeria for undermining the democratic process during Nigeria’s 2023 elections cycle.”

The U.S. government continues to emphasize that accountability and integrity are essential to strengthening democratic institutions worldwide.
