The Head of the University of Ilorin Fire Service Unit, Mr AbdulRasaq Ibrahim, has cautioned members of the university community and the general public against bush burning, citing increased fire risks during the harmattan season. He gave the warning on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, during an interview with newsmen in his office.
Ibrahim said the dry and windy conditions associated with harmattan make fires spread rapidly, turning minor incidents into major disasters that could result in loss of lives, property damage, and permanent injuries. He advised that where fire use is unavoidable, it should be closely monitored to prevent it from escalating beyond control.
The fire service chief also urged staff and students to switch off electrical appliances when not in use, particularly when leaving offices, laboratories, and classrooms. According to him, power surges often trigger fire outbreaks, which can be avoided by disconnecting appliances from electricity sources.
In addition, Ibrahim encouraged the university community to ensure functional fire extinguishers are available in vehicles, offices, and homes for quick response to emergencies. He commended the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole (SAN), for supporting the Fire Service Unit, noting that the backing from management has strengthened its capacity to operate effectively.
