UNILAG set to graduate 10,584 students as 617 bag first class

A total of 617 out of 10,584 undergraduate students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) will graduate with first class degrees at the institution’s 56th convocation ceremonies scheduled for next week.

The figure represents 5.8 per cent of the total undergraduate population completing their programmes at the university.

In all, 16,506 graduands are expected to receive first degrees, postgraduate qualifications, diplomas and certificates during the ceremonies billed for January 20 to 22 across venues within the Akoka campus.

The graduating students comprises 10,584 candidates for first degrees and diplomas, 5,782 postgraduate students, and 140 participants from the UNILAG Business School certificate programmes.

Folasade Ogunsola, vice-chancellor of the University of Lagos, disclosed these details during a press briefing held on Wednesday at the institution’s Senate Building.

Ogunsola also announced Umeozor Benedict of the Department of Business Administration, Faculty of Management Sciences, as the overall best graduating student with a perfect cumulative grade point average of 5.0.

Among the undergraduate graduands, 617 earned first class honours, 92 finished with distinction, 4,543 obtained second class upper division, and 3,910 graduated with second class lower division.

The academic outcomes further show that 1,023 students will receive third class degrees, 69 will graduate with a pass, while 330 candidates are listed as unclassified.

At the postgraduate level, 502 students will be awarded distinctions, while 5,420 others will graduate with pass degrees.
