A renewed crisis between the Chobo and Bachaman communities in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State has led to the death of two people.
POLITICS NIGERIA gathered that the clashes between the two communities escalated on Saturday, March 7, between youths of villages who resorted to carrying weapons against each other.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Adamawa State Police Command, Superintendent of Police Suleiman Nguroje said the crisis began on the night of Saturday.
In a statement released on Sunday, Nguroje said some youths from Chobo invaded the neighbouring town with guns.
He added that the youths shot sporadically into the air, forcing their counterparts from Bachaman to confront them.
“We received a report last night that suspected Chobo youths invaded Lamurde town and were shooting sporadically, prompting the Bachaman youths to mobilise and confront them,” Nguroje said.
Stating that police officers have been duly deployed to the area to restore peace and order, Nguroje noted that the exact number of casualties from the crisis is yet to be ascertained.
“We are yet to receive full casualty reports, but any development in that respect will be communicated immediately,” the police spokesperson said.
This particular incident is an offshoot of the long-standing land dispute between residents of both Adamawa communities.
Also, within the last six months, both communities have lost over 30 people, especially women, in the crisis.
The governor of the state, Ahamdu Fintiri, in a bid to broker peace between members of the communities, called for a peace talk last year.
However, barely 72 hours after the peace talk, another round of violence erupted between the communities leading to the death of over 18 people.
