Two grandpas in NDLEA net for selling drugs to teen students

  • Agency intercepts loud, meth, skunk in nationwide raids

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has arrested two elderly men, ages 84 and 75, for allegedly selling illicit drugs to teenage secondary school students in Umuahia, Abia State, as part of a week-long nationwide operation that also intercepted drugs from China and arrested wanted suspects in Ekiti, Lagos, Kogi and Oyo states.

According to a statement by NDLEA Director of Media & Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, 75-year-old Godwin Obulunbiya Obiora was arrested on Friday, June 19, 2026, at his patent medicine store on 4 Club Road, Umuahia, after credible intelligence. Officers recovered 4.64kg of opioids, including tramadol and diazepam, from his premises.

In a separate case, 84-year-old pensioner Godfrey Orji was nabbed on Thursday, June 18, by security guards at Saint Silas Secondary School, Old Umuahia, for allegedly supplying drugs to two teenage students.

The guards handed the suspects over to police, who transferred them to NDLEA. One of the students, a 15-year-old SS2 boy, told operatives that the grandpa supplies him drugs which he takes and also sells to classmates. While the two grandpas will be prosecuted, the teenagers have been placed on counselling and rehabilitation.

Major seizures and arrests nationwide
NDLEA operatives in Lagos intercepted a 9.5kg consignment of ADB Chminaca, a synthetic cannabinoid classified as a new psychoactive substance, concealed in a carton shipped from China at a courier firm. On Tuesday, June 16, officers also seized 300g of “Loud”, a strong strain of cannabis, hidden in ladies’ handbags at another logistics company.

In Ajah, Lagos, officers raided the home of wanted dealer Lukman Badmus, alias “Lukman Ogombo”, on June 19 and recovered nine bottles of codeine syrup and 30g of skunk. A follow-up at his wife’s shop in Patey, Lagos Island, led to two more bottles of codeine, drug paraphernalia, and 42 compressed blocks of skunk weighing 22.5kg found in a mini bus. The wife, Aisha Saraki, was caught trying to flush drugs in the toilet during the raid.

On the Okene/Lokoja highway in Kogi, officers on June 19 intercepted Tochukwu Onah, 33, traveling from Lagos to Abuja with 1.030kg of methamphetamine hidden in custard containers. In Ekiti, a wanted couple, James Tony Chukwudi, 48, and James Kehinde, 35, were arrested on June 16 at Oniyo Street, Efon-Alaaye, after months on the run for a 117kg skunk seizure in March.

In Oyo, a raid on Saturday, June 20, at Dangote area, Elekara, Oyo town, led to the arrest of 75-year-old Tudun Olubiyi, Nasiru Buhari, 22, and Buba Musa, 47, with 118 jumbo bags containing 1,416kg of skunk covered with sawdust. In Edo, NDLEA destroyed over 4,100kg of cannabis in Khagba forest and Ebora Camp, Ikao, and arrested suspects Patrick Imoukhede, 45, and Augustine Anyamone, 45, with processed skunk.

WADA advocacy continues
Commands across the country also intensified War Against Drug Abuse, WADA, sensitization in schools, worship centres and communities. Lectures were held at Orun Community Grammar School, Ekiti; Government Girls Secondary School, Kano; Federal Technical College, Nasarawa; Tafida Community Secondary School, Katsina; and Government Technical College, Onitsha. The Rivers Command also paid an advocacy visit to HRH Barr. Temple Ejekwu, Paramount Ruler of Rumuogba kingdom.

NDLEA Chairman, retired Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa, commended officers in DOGI, Abia, Ekiti, Oyo, Lagos, Kogi and Edo commands for balancing drug supply reduction with public sensitization, and urged them not to relent.
