U.S. President Donald Trump yesterday relieved Attorney General Pam Bondi of her duties and appointed his former personal lawyer, Todd Blanche, as Acting Attorney General.
Trump, in a statement on his Truth Social platform, praised Bondi’s service but confirmed she would transition to private practice. Her removal follows criticism over her handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files and failure to secure prosecutions against several of Trump’s perceived political opponents.
Bondi, a longtime ally of the president, previously joined Trump’s legal team during his impeachment trial and was active in contesting the 2020 election results. Despite her loyalty, she reportedly fell short of Trump’s expectations in pursuing cases against figures such as former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
Blanche, who defended Trump in multiple criminal proceedings after he left office, will now oversee the Justice Department pending a permanent appointment. Reports suggest former congressman Lee Zeldin, currently head of the Environmental Protection Agency, is being considered for the substantive role.
Bondi’s exit marks the third high‑profile departure from Trump’s cabinet in his current term, following the earlier departures of Kristi Noem and Mike Waltz, raising speculation of further reshuffles as the administration recalibrates its legal and political strategy.
