Troops foil ISWAP attack on Borno military base

Nigerian Army troops have successfully repelled an attack by suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on a military formation in Doron Baga, Kukawa LGA of Borno State.

Security sources said the insurgents launched the assault around 2:12 a.m. on Tuesday, leading to a heavy exchange of gunfire between the attackers and soldiers stationed at the base.

According to counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, the confrontation lasted for about 55 minutes, with troops maintaining control of the situation throughout the operation.

“Troops stood their ground and maintained tactical dominance during the engagement.

“They said that follow-on operations and patrols are ongoing to prevent any resurgence of terrorist activity in the area,” Makama said.

Sources added that a number of the attackers were neutralised during the clash, while the military recorded no casualties or loss of equipment.

They also disclosed that follow-up patrols and operations are currently ongoing in the area to prevent the terrorists from regrouping, while security personnel have been directed to remain alert and sustain heightened surveillance.

The attack is the second targeting a military base in Kukawa within a week.
