President Bola Tinubu on Thursday held a closed-door meeting with Senate President Godswill Akpabio at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, days before the All Progressives Congress (APC) is scheduled to launch its presidential campaign for the 2027 general election.
PoliticsNigeria reports that the meeting took place on October 22, 2026, ahead of the ruling party’s planned campaign flag-off in Kaduna on Saturday, October 24.
The development comes as the APC intensifies preparations for Tinubu’s re-election bid ahead of the presidential poll scheduled for January 16, 2027.
Akpabio was seen leaving the Presidential Villa at about 4:45 p.m. in his official Mercedes-Benz sedan.
The meeting reportedly lasted about an hour before the Senate President departed the premises.
However, details of the discussions were not immediately available.
Neither the Presidency nor the Senate had publicly disclosed the purpose of the meeting as of the time this report was filed.
The timing of the meeting places it within a busy period for the ruling party, which is preparing to formally begin its nationwide campaign while also dealing with legislative and administrative matters ahead of the elections.
The APC is expected to use the Kaduna event to set the tone for its campaign and mobilise support for Tinubu’s second-term ambition.
The party has spent recent weeks putting its campaign leadership structure in place and preparing for activities ahead of the 2027 polls.
The party’s National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, had indicated that preparations for the campaign launch were complete after meeting with Tinubu on Tuesday.
His briefing followed consultations involving the President and the party’s leadership as the APC prepared to begin its campaign activities.
The campaign council’s leadership structure was announced in August. Tinubu was named chairman, while Vice President Kashim Shettima and Yilwatda were appointed vice chairmen.
Former Zamfara State Governor and Senator Abdul’aziz Yari was named Director-General of the campaign council.
Akpabio was also appointed Deputy Director-General (South), placing him among the senior party figures expected to coordinate campaign activities in the southern part of the country.
The campaign council was formally inaugurated on October 14, marking another step in the party’s preparations for the presidential election.
Its members are expected to coordinate mobilisation, political engagement and other activities aimed at securing support for the APC candidate across the country.
With the campaign launch only days away, the meeting between Tinubu and Akpabio comes at a critical point for the ruling party.
As Senate President, Akpabio occupies a key position in the National Assembly, while his role in the campaign council gives him a direct responsibility in the APC’s preparations for the election.
Although the issues discussed during Thursday’s meeting remain unknown, the President and the Senate President have responsibilities that extend beyond party campaigns, particularly as the National Assembly continues its legislative work ahead of the 2027 elections.
