Following an upsurge in terrorist activities in Niger State, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 7, AIG Victor Olaiya, has relocated his office to the state to coordinate security operations.
The Police Air Wing has also been deployed to the state to conduct aerial surveillance as security agencies intensify efforts to rescue hundreds of worshippers abducted during last Friday’s prayers in Borgu Local Government Area.
The State Commissioner of Police, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, disclosed this on Thursday during a joint press briefing involving the police, Department of State Services (DSS) and the Commissioner for Homeland Security on measures being taken to secure the safe release of the abducted victims.
Elleman, who was represented by the command’s spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the AIG had been deployed to the state to coordinate the rescue operation and ensure the victims were recovered promptly.
He explained that the operation would be conducted in collaboration with the Nigerian Army, DSS and other relevant security agencies.
According to him, the rescue operation would commence in earnest today, in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu.
The Commissioner also expressed appreciation to the Niger State Government for providing the security agencies with the necessary support and logistics to enhance their operations and secure the release of the abducted victims.
