Tax reforms: Weak revenue system keeps nation poor – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has defended his administration’s new tax reform laws, declaring that no country can achieve lasting prosperity with a weak and fragmented revenue system.

The President spoke on Tuesday during the commissioning of the headquarters of the National Revenue Service (NRS) in Abuja, where he said the reforms were introduced to simplify taxation, remove distortions and create a transparent, investment-friendly economy.

Recalling promises made at his inauguration, Tinubu said the reforms were part of a broader commitment to rebuild Nigeria’s economy and restore confidence in governance.

According to him, “On my inauguration day, I made a solemn pledge that we will move Nigeria from the dimness of uncertainty into the clear light of renewed hope.

“We will confront structural weakness, resentfulness and build an economy anchored on discipline, equity, and opportunity.

“Today, I stand before you that these words are not rhetorics but covenant with the Nigerian people.”

The President said efficient taxation remains central to national growth and public trust.

“No serious nation can achieve lasting prosperity on a weak and fragmented revenue system.

“No government can demand trust from its citizens when taxation is unpaid, inefficient, or unjust.

“That is why this administration took the bold decision to embark on far reaching tax and fiscal reforms,” he added.

Tinubu also praised Zaach Adedeji, the Chairman of the service for what he described as strong performance since taking office.

“The data demonstrated showed that Nigeria is working. You worked so hard Adedeji. Yours is an exceptional achievement for this administration,” he said.

According to the President, the country is already seeing gains through improved fiscal stability, stronger foreign reserves and increased investment confidence.

Describing the new headquarters as more than a physical structure, Tinubu said it symbolised professionalism, transparency and efficiency in public service.

“This is more than concrete and steel. It is a symbol of a new standard of professionalism, transparency, efficiency, and service,” he said.

He urged officials of the agency to go beyond revenue collection by building trust and ensuring fairness in their operations.

“You must not only collect revenue, but you must also build trust and ensure fairness.

“You must demonstrate that govt can be accountable, efficient, and response.”

Tinubu further challenged future leaders to sustain reforms and place national development above politics.

“Let those who will come after us, politics apart, be ready to build a history that is greater than ours.

“History will not just us by what we say, but by what we do.

“We have chosen reform, discipline, and progress, and we will take the course steadfastly with focus.”
