Rainstorm : UNN relocates students to another hostels

Prof.Christain Ezeibe, the Dean of Students Affairs Department, University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) says students affected in Awolowo and Isa kaita hostels where rainstorm on June 5 blown off some sections of the hostels have been relocated.

Ezeibe said this in Nsukka on Saturday while speaking with our correspondentwho visited the Nsukka campus to see the level damage done to students hostels by the rainstorm.

He explained that, on Friday June 5 rainstorm as result of downpour damaged some sections of female hostels in Awolowo and Isa kaita in which some students bed spaces were affected.

“All female students whose bed-spaces were affected by that rainstorm that blown off some sections of the hostels have been relocated to another hostels after that ugly incident on Friday.

“After that incident, the Vice-chancellor Prof Simon Ortuanya immediately directed that all affected students should be moved to another hostels,”he said.

According to the Dean, over 20 students who provided details of their bed spaces to the Department of Students Affairs have been relocated to other hostels.

Our correspondent who visited the UNN Awolowo and Isa kaita hostels saw affected students affected moving their belongings to new hostels provided for them.

Meanwhile, the acting Public Relations Officer (PRO) Mr Inya Egwu had in statement in Nsukka on Saturday said that rainstorm on Friday afternoon caused significant damage to some university facilities and infrastructures.

“The management of the UNN wishes to inform members of the university community and the general public of the impact of a severe rainstorm that swept across the Nsukka Campus on Friday afternoon, causing significant damage to some university facilities and infrastructure.

“The storm affected many parts of the campus, with the most severe damage recorded at Awolowo and Isa Kaita Hostels where sections of the hostel roofs were blown off,”.

“Some trees were uprooted by the storm while branches fell across some roads within the campus, temporarily obstructing movement in some areas

“Fortunately, no loss of life has been reported,,”the statement said.

According to the statement, University Management has mobilised relevant units, including the Works Services, Taskforce on Environment, Security Unit,

As well as Directorate of Housing and Accommodations, and the Student Affairs Department, to clear the affected roads, and ensure the safety of students, staff and visitors.

“Alternative arrangements are also being made to minimize inconvenience to students residing in the affected hostels,” the statement noted

The statement also said that, the Vice-Chancellor has expressed sympathy to students and members of staff who were affected by the storm and assures the university community that management is committed to their welfare, safety and security

” Further updates will be communicated as assessments on the impact of the storm are completed,”the statement added.
