The Police Service Commission (PSC) has released the timetable for the 2026 promotion examinations for senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force, with the exercise scheduled to run from Monday, September 28, to Wednesday, September 30, 2026.
The examinations cover officers seeking promotion from Assistant Superintendent of Police to Deputy Superintendent of Police, Deputy Superintendent of Police to Superintendent of Police, and Superintendent of Police to Chief Superintendent of Police.
According to the timetable released by the Commission, officers seeking promotion from Superintendent of Police to Chief Superintendent of Police will take their examination on Monday, September 28.
Accreditation for the SP-to-CSP category will take place between 8:00 a.m. and 10:50 a.m., while the examination itself will hold from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
On Tuesday, September 29, attention will shift to officers seeking promotion from the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police to Superintendent of Police.
The PSC said accreditation for the DSP-to-SP examination will also run from 8:00 a.m. to 10:50 a.m., with the examination scheduled for 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
The final day of the exercise, Wednesday, September 30, has been reserved for officers seeking promotion from Assistant Superintendent of Police to Deputy Superintendent of Police.
For the ASP-to-DSP category, accreditation will begin at 8:00 a.m. and continue until 11:45 a.m., while the examination will take place between 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m.
The Commission urged all participating officers to take note of the dates and their respective accreditation and examination periods as they prepare for the exercise.
The promotion examinations form part of the processes used by the Commission in determining the career progression of officers within the examinable cadres of the Nigeria Police Force.
Under the PSC’s promotion guidelines, officers seeking advancement through the ASP-to-DSP and DSP-to-SP cadres are required, among other conditions, to attend prescribed promotion courses and pass the relevant examinations before becoming eligible for promotion.
The Commission’s Police Promotion Department is responsible for participating in promotion examinations and interviews in conjunction with police authorities, keeping promotion-examination records and processing recommendations for the promotion of senior police officers.
The PSC has in recent times emphasised merit-based promotion within the Force. In January 2026, the Commission said promotions approved at its plenary followed processes that included written examinations and oral interviews for affected senior officers.
