The Police Command in Benue on Thursday issued cheques totalling N3.6 million to seven families whose breadwinners died in active service in the state.
Presenting the cheques to the next of kin of the deceased in Makurdi, the Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Ifeanyi Emenari, commended them for their steadfastness.
Emenari explained that the funds were drawn from the Police Welfare Scheme as approved by the Inspector General of Police.
Represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Finance and Administration, Yakubu Mohammed, the CP said the force would continue to remember them for their excellent service to the nation.
He said though money could not replace the lives of their loved ones, it would cushion the effect of death on families, especially on issues of education.
Emenari stated that the exercise was part of activities lined up to mark 2026 National Police Week.
Also, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Mr Okon Asuquo, said the IGP has prioritised the welfare of personnel.
Asuquo further advised the beneficiaries to invest the money into businesses that would help them become self-reliant as they wait for other benefits from the force.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs Doolumum Abimiku thanked the force for the continuous support to its personnel even after death. (NAN) www.nannews.ng
