The national police council has confirmed Olatunji Disu as the substantive inspector-general of police.
The decision was reached on Monday at a meeting convened by President Bola Tinubu at the state house, Abuja.
Following the endorsement, the President is set to forward Disu’s name to the senate for screening and confirmation in line with the Police Act 2020.
Bayo Onanuga, special adviserto the President on information and strategy, confirmed the development after the meeting, stating that members of the council unanimously endorsed Disu’s appointment.
The council meeting, which lasted about 40 minutes, began shortly after the President arrived at the Council Chamber.
The session was held in compliance with the provisions of the police act, which mandate the council to consider and approve the appointment of an inspector-general before senate confirmation.
The police council is chaired by the President and comprises the 36 state governors, the chairman of the police service commission and the inspector-general of police.
Kashim Shettima, the vice president, George Akume, secretary to the government of the federation, Nuhu Ribadu, national security adviser, Didi Walson-Jack, head of civil service and several governors attended the meeting.
Also present were the deputy governor of Kogi State and the ministers of the federal capital territory, police affairs and interior.
Disu, 59, had been serving in an acting capacity following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun, former Inspector-General.
