Police confirm ex-APC women leader murdered in Bauchi

The Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed the murder of the former zonal women leader of the All Progressives Congress in Bauchi South, Mrs Jemimah Dutse.

Dutse was found dead in a pool of blood inside her residence at Muazu New Layout, Yelwa, Bauchi metropolis, with her throat allegedly slit by yet-to-be-identified assailants.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Nafiu Habib, confirmed the killing in a statement on Sunday, saying investigation had commenced.

Habib said a 49-year-old resident of Muazu New Layout reported the incident at the ‘E’ Division of the command on October 3, 2026.

He said detectives immediately visited the scene, documented their findings and evacuated the deceased’s body to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, for medical examination and autopsy.

The police spokesman said the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, had directed that the case be transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for a discreet and thorough investigation.

He said the investigation was aimed at unraveling the circumstances surrounding Dutse’s death and bringing those responsible to justice.

The command condoled with the deceased’s family, friends and political associates, assuring the public that “no stone will be left unturned” in the investigation.

Meanwhile, the Take-It-Back Movement, Bauchi State Chapter, condemned the killing and called on security agencies to immediately identify and arrest those responsible.

In a statement signed by its state coordinator, Nazif Bashi, the group described the killing as a “senseless act of violence” and expressed concern over the safety of residents in the state.

The group said, “A society where citizens, regardless of their political affiliations, gender, or status, cannot feel safe in their own homes is one on the brink of breakdown.”

The movement urged the police, Department of State Services and other security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend the perpetrators.

It also called for regular updates to be provided to the deceased’s family and the public as the investigation progresses.

The group said the killing was not only an attack on Dutse and her family but also a threat to peace and security in Bauchi State.

It urged the state government and security authorities to strengthen surveillance and intelligence gathering across Bauchi metropolis and neighbouring local government areas.

The movement further called on civil society organisations, trade unions, human rights defenders and residents to demand accountability until those responsible for the killing are arrested and prosecuted.
