Plateau Governor Bans Night Grazing, Mining Amid Rising Security Concerns

Governor Caleb Muftwang has banned night grazing and night mining activities in Plateau State as part of new measures to address worsening insecurity. He also directed that all mining operations across the state must end by 5 p.m. daily.

The governor announced the directives during a sympathy visit to the Nding community in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, where recent attacks by bandits claimed several lives. He also prohibited grazing by underage children, urging parents and livestock owners to ensure proper management of cattle.

Muftwang said his administration would not surrender to violence and criminality, directing security agencies to intensify efforts to identify and prosecute those responsible for the attacks. He assured residents that the state government would continue strengthening security measures to restore peace and stability across affected communities.

The governor further appealed to the media to avoid reports capable of discouraging tourists and investors, insisting that Plateau remains the “Home of Peace and Tourism.” He also assured farmers of improved security ahead of the planting season and promised subsidised fertiliser distribution to support agricultural activities.

At a security stakeholders’ meeting attended by religious leaders, traditional rulers, youth representatives, and community groups, Muftwang vowed that perpetrators of violence in Barkin Ladi and other parts of the state would face justice. Community leaders and officials, including representatives of the Christian Association of Nigeria and Jama’atu Nasril Islam, commended the governor’s response and pledged support for efforts aimed at restoring lasting peace.
