The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has welcomed the publication of candidates list for the 2027 General Election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The party said publication of the names of its presidential candidate, Senator Professor Sandy Ojang Onor, and his running mate, Alhaji Babangida Umar, had ended months of speculation over whether it would field a candidate for the poll.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, the PDP said the release of the candidates’ names had “silenced doubters” and disproved what it described as sustained misinformation that the party would be absent from the presidential race.
According to the party, the development vindicates its leadership and demonstrates that the legal and constitutional processes have run their course.
“For months, unfounded claims were deployed as a campaign tool to mislead Nigerians, discourage our supporters and create doubts about the future of our party. Today, the facts have prevailed, the law has taken its course, and the PDP has once again been vindicated,” the statement said.
The opposition party thanked millions of its supporters and members for remaining loyal despite what it described as attempts to undermine confidence in the party.
It said the steadfast support of its members had strengthened its resolve to rebuild the party and prepare for victory in the 2027 general election.
The PDP also expressed appreciation to INEC, the judiciary and security agencies for what it described as their commitment to the rule of law and the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities without fear or favour.
The party reiterated its commitment to reconciliation and internal unity as preparations for the election gather momentum.
It appealed to aggrieved members to set aside their differences in the collective interest of the party, insisting that unity remains essential to its electoral ambitions.
The PDP also welcomed members who recently returned to the party as well as new defectors from across the country.
It said the growing number of returning members reflected increasing public confidence in the party and its vision for Nigeria.
The party further maintained that, under the leadership of its National Chairman, Hon. Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed Takushara, and National Secretary, Distinguished Senator Samuel N. Anyanwu, it offers Nigerians what it described as a credible, competent and unifying alternative ahead of the 2027 elections.
The statement concluded by congratulating party members and expressing confidence that the PDP would emerge stronger as campaigns for the 2027 general election intensify.
