Oyo CP pledges stronger security around campuses as NANS seeks closer collaboration

Commissioner of Police in Oyo, Olugbenga Abimbola, has pledged to strengthen security around tertiary institutions across the state as the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) called for deeper collaboration to safeguard students and campuses.

The CP gave the assurance on Monday while receiving the NANS National Financial Secretary, Comrade John Alao, alongside other student leaders, including the Chairman of the NANS Joint Campus Council (JCC), Oyo State Axis, during a strategic courtesy visit to the Police Command Headquarters in Ibadan.

Abimbola described the safety of students and educational institutions as non-negotiable, assuring that the command would intensify intelligence gathering, routine patrols, and rapid response operations around campuses across Oyo State.

He said the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to working closely with student bodies to tackle cultism, robbery, kidnapping, and other criminal activities capable of disrupting academic pursuits.

“We will not fold our arms while criminal elements threaten the peace of our campuses. The Oyo State Police Command is ready to strengthen synergy with NANS and other stakeholders to ensure students learn in a safe and secure environment,” the CP said.

Earlier, Alao commended the commissioner for what he described as his exemplary leadership, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and security in the state.

He said the command’s proactive policing strategy had boosted the confidence of students and members of the academic community.

According to him, the visit forms part of NANS’ nationwide stakeholder engagement aimed at enhancing the protection of Nigerian students ahead of the new academic session.

Alao also reaffirmed the association’s commitment to partnering with security agencies, noting that intelligence sharing and peaceful coexistence between students and the police are essential to creating a secure learning environment.

As part of activities leading to the association’s national inauguration scheduled for July 14, 2026, in Abuja, the NANS National Financial Secretary presented a symbolic appreciation gift to the commissioner in recognition of his contributions to public safety.
