The National President of FOSSU, Ahmed Mufutau, stated this on Wednesday during a press briefing at the Conference Centre, Ministry of Education, Oyo State Government Secretariat, Ibadan.
Mufutau described education as the bedrock of national development and a powerful equaliser, saying nations that prioritise the intellectual development of young people lay the foundation for prosperity, innovation and peace.
He said FOSSU welcomed the bursary scheme as a timely intervention for final-year students facing expenses related to research, projects, clearance and examination fees.
He also commended the inclusion of Colleges of Education students in the scheme.
According to him, the financial breakdown reflects the government’s recognition of the varying academic costs faced by students. Clinical students and those studying Aeronautics and Aviation will receive N500,000 each, while university undergraduates will receive N200,000, Higher National Diploma (HND) students N150,000 and final-year National Certificate in Education (NCE) students N100,000.

He said 5,000 final-year students were expected to benefit from the scheme this year, compared with about 2,600 beneficiaries last year.
Mufutau added that this was the sixth consecutive year Oyo indigenes attending Law School would receive N500,000 each.
He thanked Governor Makinde for sustaining the initiative and praised the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, Hon. Victor Olojede, for serving as a link between the government and students.
He urged eligible students to prepare ahead of the registration exercise, scheduled to run from October 12 to November 1, 2026, and warned them against using unofficial links.
“Register promptly, prepare all required documents, ensure absolute accuracy and strictly avoid unverified information to protect yourselves from fraudulent actors,” he said.
In his closing remarks, Mufutau declared FOSSU’s support for Makinde’s presidential ambition.
He said, “For someone who has done so much as Governor will definitely do better as President. As the number one indigenous student in the state, and on behalf of all indigenous bodies in Oyo State, we hereby declare our support for the candidacy of Seyi Makinde as President in 2027, and we shall mobilize to ensure victory come January 2027 elections”.
Corroborating the position, Olojede said Makinde’s governance model in Oyo State could bring significant changes to Nigeria if replicated at the federal level.
He listed the abolition of the N3,000 public secondary school fee, recruitment of teachers, distribution of learning materials and efforts to return out-of-school children to classrooms among the state government’s achievements in education.
“No student would have a reason not to be in school. This government loves Nigerian students at all levels, and your support for Engineer Seyi Makinde will not be swept under the carpet,” Olojede said.
He added, “We believe strongly that if Governor Makinde becomes the president, we are going to reset Nigeria. This government has proved that we can support students.”
