The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has commended the Osun State Police Command for foiling an alleged assassination attempt on the Director-General of its Governorship Campaign Council, Wole Oke.
The commendation came after the parade of three suspects by the command on Thursday over the alleged plot to assassinate Oke in Ipetu Ijesa on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.
The police identified the suspects as disc jockey Olalekan Oriyomi, Ayotunde Ikupolati, 44, and Femi Fakinleye, 31.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, represented by the spokesperson for the command, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, also said an English Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of live ammunition was recovered from one of the suspects.
In a statement signed by its Director of Media and Publicity, Kola Olabisi, and obtained in Osogbo on Friday, the APC praised the police for what it described as a proactive effort to rid the state of criminal elements.
The party said, “Had it been the suspected assassins who succeeded, the state would have been thrown into another mourning session, which the lying merchants in the state would have loaded its causes on our party without waiting for the police investigation.
“We have absolute confidence in the police that they would do a thorough investigation into the assassination attempt on our Director-General with a view to exposing, arresting and prosecuting all those who may be directly or remotely connected with the crime,” the statement added.
The APC also questioned whether political violence should accompany the forthcoming governorship election, saying, “Should the whole state be turned into a killing field because of the re-election bid of a governor who has been outrightly rejected by the people because of his unenviable poor performance in the past three years?
“Is it by force and crude means to serve the people who have seen that your best is not desirable for the needed advancement of the state to an acceptable standard comparable to other prosperous states in the nation?”
The party expressed concern that Governor Ademola Adeleke and the state chairman of the ruling Accord Party, Victor Akande, had yet to publicly condemn the alleged assassination attempt several days after the incident.
The APC urged the police to sustain the investigation, saying, “While we are giving kudos to the police over the development, we are further enjoining them to intensify their efforts to completely rid the state of political hoodlums and go after the influential figures mentioned by the arrested suspected assassins who have been confessing like canary birds in police detention.”
The party also encouraged its members to continue campaigning peacefully for its governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election, expressing confidence in the candidate’s prospects at the poll.
