One dead, five trapped as rice mill collapses in Kebbi

One worker has died and five others remain trapped after a section of a private rice mill in Birnin Kebbi collapsed on Tuesday evening.

Kebbi State Deputy Governor Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida led a government delegation to the site, assuring that “every possible effort is being made to rescue those still trapped.”

He emphasized that the safety of workers is paramount and pledged continued government support until the operation concludes.

A project engineer confirmed the fatality and reported that five individuals were still buried under metal and debris. A joint rescue team comprising the Kebbi State Fire Service and emergency responders is using heavy equipment to reach the trapped workers, with officials stressing caution to avoid further casualties.

The cause of the collapse remains unknown, and the deputy governor said a full investigation would follow the rescue to prevent future incidents.

Rice milling is a key part of Kebbi State’s agro-industrial drive, employing hundreds of workers across private facilities. The incident has raised concerns over safety standards in the sector.

Tafida extended condolences to the family of the deceased and promised government assistance to affected families, urging prayers for the trapped workers.
