The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has invited traditional priests, priestesses and native doctors across the Benin Kingdom to an emergency meeting as concerns grow over the rising wave of insecurity in Edo State and other parts of Nigeria.
The meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at the Oba’s Palace in Benin City, is expected to examine how traditional institutions can contribute to ongoing efforts aimed at restoring peace and improving security within the state.
The directive was conveyed in a statement issued on Friday by the Benin Traditional Council (BTC), through Chief Victor Nosakhare on behalf of the council’s Secretary, Frank Irabor.

The statement noted that the gathering would provide an opportunity to explore indigenous and traditional strategies that could complement government interventions in tackling criminal activities and maintaining public order.
The Benin Traditional Council said the invitation was issued under the direct instruction of Oba Ewuare II and should be treated with urgency by all those concerned.
Participants expected at the meeting include Igiohen N’ Ikpia and Igiohen N’ Ikhuo, comprising traditional healers, native doctors, priests and priestesses from different parts of the Benin Kingdom.
The council stated that the monarch’s decision was informed by the need to mobilise every legitimate avenue available to support efforts aimed at addressing security challenges confronting Edo State and the country at large.
In the statement, the palace stressed that traditional institutions remain important partners in promoting peace, stability and social order within their communities.
