Nollywood actress, Oby Kechere is dead

Oby Kechere, Nigerian actress and film director widely recognised for her memorable role as Ms Koi Koi in the 2002 comedy classic Aki na Ukwa, has died after a prolonged illness.

Her death was confirmed by Uche Agbo, the national president of the directors guild of Nigeria who disclosed that she passed away on April 27, 2026, after a prolonged illness.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Agbo expressed deep grief over the loss, describing Kechere as a committed professional and a key figure within the guild.

“It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Madam Cecilia Oby Kechere, vice chairman of the DGN Abuja chapter,” he said.

He noted that the late actress made significant contributions to the growth and unity of the guild, particularly within its Abuja chapter, adding that her dedication to the profession would not be forgotten.

Kechere, a graduate of Theatre Arts from the University of Ibadan, began her acting career in 2001, featuring in several “August Meeting” films before gaining wider recognition through her performance in Aki na Ukwa.

A native of Mbaise in Imo State, she was celebrated for her talent, versatility and commitment to the Nigerian film industry.

Agbo extended condolences to her family, colleagues and loved ones, praying for the peaceful repose of her soul.
