NiMet Forecasts Sunshine, Thunderstorms Across Nigeria This Week

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted a mix of sunshine, clouds, and thunderstorms across the country from Monday to Wednesday.

According to NiMet’s outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, northern Nigeria is expected to experience sunny skies with occasional clouds in the mornings, while parts of Taraba State may see thunderstorms with light rains later in the day.

The north-central region is forecasted to have cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine in the mornings, followed by light rain and thunderstorms over parts of Kogi State and Benue State. Southern states, including Akwa Ibom and Cross River State, are expected to see morning thunderstorms with more widespread rain and thunder later in the day.

On Tuesday, NiMet anticipates sunny mornings with clouds over the north, with thunderstorms affecting parts of Taraba and Kaduna State. Afternoon showers are expected over Adamawa State, Taraba, Borno State, Gombe, Bauchi, and Kaduna States. The north-central region is likely to experience morning thunderstorms over the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Benue, and Nasarawa States, followed by widespread afternoon showers. Southern areas are expected to experience thunderstorms with moderate rain in the afternoon and evening.

Wednesday’s forecast shows northern Nigeria with morning sunshine and afternoon thunderstorms over Adamawa, Borno, Gombe, Kaduna, and Taraba States. The north-central region may see isolated morning and afternoon thunderstorms, while southern states including Lagos, Osun, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom are expected to experience strong morning thunderstorms and widespread afternoon rain.

NiMet has urged residents to take precautions during thunderstorms, including securing loose objects, avoiding driving in heavy rain, staying away from tall trees, and disconnecting electrical appliances. The agency also advised wearing breathable clothing, staying hydrated, and monitoring local forecasts.
