A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Matthew Uwuigbe, has been found dead in a hotel room in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Edo State.
Uwuigbe, who taught in the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, reportedly died on Monday, October 5, 2026. The circumstances surrounding his death are being investigated by the Edo State Police Command.
According to the police, Uwuigbe had checked into the hotel with a 21-year-old woman, identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
Police spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the lecturer later asked the woman to get water. She reportedly returned to find him lifeless and raised the alarm.
Ikoedem said: “The woman returned to the room and discovered Uwuigbe lying lifeless, prompting the report to the police.”
The woman, alongside the hotel owner and manager, has been arrested and detained as investigations continue. Police have yet to establish or disclose the cause of death.
Uwuigbe’s remains have been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital Mortuary pending further investigation.
AAU confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its academic staff but stressed that the incident occurred outside the university and was unrelated to its activities. The institution also clarified that the 21-year-old woman involved was not an AAU student.
