The city of Lagos will welcome global legal and business leaders next week as Nigeria hosts the 10th edition of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Africa Conference on International Arbitration and ADR.
From June 3 to June 5, 2026, the Lagos Continental Hotel will serve as the venue for this high-profile gathering, which is expected to attract delegates from over 30 countries across Africa, Europe, and Asia.
Among the dignitaries confirmed are the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Attorney-General of Lagos State, and several Attorneys-General from other jurisdictions. Also in attendance will be leading arbitration experts, business executives, and the President of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, Claudia Salomon, who will lead a delegation from Paris.
Speaking at a press briefing, Dorothy Ufeme Ufot, SAN, Chair of the ICC Nigeria Arbitration and ADR Commission, described Nigeria’s selection as host country as a major endorsement of its expanding role in international commercial dispute resolution. She noted that several African countries had bid to host the anniversary edition, but ICC headquarters in Paris returned the conference to Nigeria due to its successful record in past editions and its capacity to deliver world-class arbitration events.
Themed “A Decade of Excellence: Shaping the Future of International Arbitration and ADR in Africa”, the conference will explore pressing issues in dispute resolution, including: Infrastructure disputes, Energy transition conflicts, Digital economy disputes, Artificial intelligence in arbitration, Investment protection, Geopolitical risks
Ufot emphasized that while Africa is richly endowed with natural resources, disputes arising from investments are still largely resolved abroad, depriving African professionals of opportunities and revenue. She insisted that African lawyers must play a central role in resolving disputes linked to African resources and investments.
She highlighted the progress made by Nigerian arbitrators, who are now increasingly appointed by leading global institutions such as the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) and the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC). Her own recent appointment as Presiding Arbitrator in a dispute involving Russian parties was cited as evidence of growing global confidence in Nigerian arbitration expertise.
According to Olubunmi Osuntuyi, Secretary-General of ICC Nigeria, the conference will feature advanced training sessions led by ICC experts, covering topics such as: Fast-track arbitration, Judicial support for arbitration, Drafting balanced arbitration clauses and Managing arbitration costs .
Co-chair Jean Chiazor Anishere added that the growing recognition of African arbitrators globally reflects the continent’s intellectual and professional capacity to handle complex disputes, and Nigeria’s hosting of the conference will further cement its position as a leading arbitration hub in Africa.
The conference will conclude with a gala dinner to commemorate its 10th anniversary, celebrating milestones in arbitration practice across Africa and reinforcing Nigeria’s leadership in shaping the future of international arbitration.
