Tesla Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Elon Musk, has claimed that Nigeria recorded four million more births than the entire European Union (EU) in 2025, using the comparison to reinforce his warning about Europe’s declining birth rate.
In a post on X on Friday, he wrote, “Nigeria alone had 4 million more births than the entire EU last year!”
The latest comment comes barely a year after Musk warned that Europe risks disappearing if it fails to reverse its declining fertility rate. The former senior adviser to United States President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed concern that falling birth rates could threaten humanity’s long-term survival.
Musk renewed that warning on X after sharing an infographic that purported to show fertility rates across Europe. The chart was originally posted by an account identified as Giga Based Dad with the caption: “Europe will cease to exist soon. We need to bring back having HUGE families.”
Supporting the message, Musk wrote: “Either Europe starts having large families or it will keep dying.”
The infographic indicated that most European countries were experiencing what it described as low fertility rates.
It defined fertility rate as “The expected number of children born per woman in her child-bearing years” in 2024, according to the infographic credited to geo.universe.
The chart also classified countries where women were expected to have fewer than one child on average as having an “extremely low” fertility rate.
It further described the “low” category as countries where women were expected to have more than one child on average, although it did not specify the upper limit for that classification. The infographic noted that countries with an “insufficient” birth rate average 1.5 children per woman.
