The lawmarker, representing Akoko-Edo II Constituency, Hon. Yekini Idaiyi, has emerged as the new Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly.
Politics Nigeria understands that Idaiyi’s emergence followed the resignation of the former Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, from the leadership of the state legislature.
Following Agbebaku’s resignation, the Deputy Speaker, Jonathan Ibhamawu, presided over plenary, during which Idaiyi was subsequently sworn in as the new Speaker.
The development marks a fresh change in the leadership of the Edo Assembly and comes amid reports of internal moves against the former Speaker.
The circumstances surrounding Agbebaku’s resignation were not immediately clear as of the time of filing this report.
There were also reports that Agbebaku had been suspended by the Assembly, although details of the alleged suspension remained unclear.
Agbebaku had emerged as Speaker of the 8th Edo State House of Assembly in June 2023 and had led the legislature until his reported resignation on Monday.
