NDLEA nabs 93-year-old grandfather, doctor in nationwide drug crackdown

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 93-year-old man and a 69-year-old medical doctor among several suspects in a series of coordinated nationwide anti-narcotics operations.

According to a statement on Sunday by Femi Babafemi, the agency’s director of media and advocacy, Pa Friday Ahukanna Chigbu, the elderly suspect was arrested at his residence in Umuagbaigba, Amavo Nkwogu village, Osisioma Local Government Area of Abia State on April 7, 2026.

The agency said a search of his home led to the recovery of 7.7 kilograms of skunk (a strain of cannabis).

The suspect reportedly admitted he had been using the substance since 1959 and only recently ventured into trafficking.

In a separate operation, NDLEA officers intercepted an Ivorian national, Gohouri Michael, at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano while attempting to board a flight to Milan via Addis Ababa.

He was found with 1.49 kilograms of cocaine concealed in 82 wraps.

Further investigations led to the arrest of a 69-year-old medical doctor, Dr Chudi Daniel Ofomata, in Ogun State, alleged to have coordinated parts of the drug network.

NDLEA said substances including promazepam and promethazine injections were recovered from him.

The agency also confirmed multiple arrests and seizures across the country, including in Lagos State, Imo State, Niger State, Borno State and Abuja.

Mohammed Buba Marwa, NDLEA Chairman commended officers involved in the operations, praising their continued efforts in both drug supply reduction and demand control nationwide.
