There was a strong call for unity, improved health, and deeper camaraderie as alumni of the 27 Short Service Combatant Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy marked their 40th anniversary in Abuja.
President of the group, retired Maj.-Gen. Okechukwu Ugo, who spoke at the reunion on Saturday, expressed gratitude to God for the milestone, recalling that the last gathering was held in 2022 at the National Defence College.
According to him, the reunion created a platform for members to reconnect, reflect on shared military experiences, and celebrate decades of service to the nation.
Ugo paid glowing tribute to fallen colleagues and prayed for members facing health challenges, urging sustained mutual support within the group.
He revealed that activities lined up for the anniversary included health management lectures, election of new executives, and a gala night.
Emphasising the significance of the health sessions, especially on geriatrics, he encouraged members to embrace continuous learning for better wellbeing.
In a show of compassion, he disclosed that wives of members visited an orphanage in Kuje, offering humanitarian support to underprivileged children.
He described the outreach as a reflection of the association’s enduring values of social responsibility.
On leadership transition, Ugo stated that the current executives would step aside for new leaders, expressing confidence that the process would be free and credible.
He added that the gala night would serve as a moment of relaxation and celebration of their shared journey.
The event featured a health awareness lecture titled “Geriatric Health: Mind and Body,” delivered by Prof. Ehiz Odigie-Okpataku and Dr. Okiobeya Davidson.
