By Danlami Nmodu

The effort by civil society activists and government officials toward building community networks across Nigeria may become a reality with time. This hope was raised within the week as the Nigerian Commuinications Commission, NCC said it has gone very far in coming up with a framework for community networks in rural and urban areas.

This development was revealed during the question and answer session, Wednesday at a virtual meeting on the presentation of NCC’s Quarterly Industry Network Performance Reports.

While answering a question by Newsdiaryonline, one of the Directors of NCC said the commission has gone very far on a framework for community networks and very soon, it will engage the stakeholders to enable their activation across the country.

The official said, “The second question is about community networks. The commission actually is working assiduously in conjunction with the NGO mentioned(CITAD) by the questioner to come up with a framework.

“Of course a framework is required..You need to come up with a framework on community networks, which is definitely different from the existing networks.

“So as we speak, we have gone very far in coming up with a framework, which pretty soon, I believe the commission will engage stakeholders on the framework to enable the activation of community networks, across the country both in rural areas and in urban centres.”

Newsdiaryonline reports that the Y.Z Ya’u led civil society organisation CITAD, has been in the vanguard of the campaign and activities toward the establishment of community networks in Nigeria. The efforts however require effective collaboration from relevant government agencies like the NCC and other stakeholders.
