NAFDAC raises alarm over fake Kiss condoms in circulation

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cautioned Nigerians over the circulation of counterfeit Kiss condoms in different markets across the country.

The agency issued the warning in a public alert released on X on Monday, identified as Public Alert No. 042/2025.

NAFDAC explained that the intelligence was provided by DKT International Nigeria, the marketing authorisation holder and a prominent non-governmental organisation involved in contraceptive social marketing.

“The information was received from the Marketing Authorisation Holder, DKT International Nigeria, a leading non-governmental organisation focused on contraceptive social marketing,” the agency stated.

The alert noted that the fake product has already surfaced in major commercial hubs including Onitsha Market, Idumota Market, Trade Fair Market and several locations in Kano, Abuja, Uyo, Gombe and Enugu.

“The Fake Kiss Condom has been reported to be found in Onitsha Market, Idumota Market, Trade Fair Market, and various markets in Kano, Abuja, Uyo, Gombe, Enugu, and others,” NAFDAC added.

The agency explained that Kiss Condom is a male latex contraceptive developed to reduce the risk of unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections such as HIV, gonorrhoea and syphilis.

NAFDAC warned that the spread of counterfeit versions defeats this purpose and exposes users to severe health dangers.

Highlighting the implications, the agency said fake condoms are often poorly manufactured, unsterilised and unregulated, making them unsafe.

“The use of fake condoms poses serious health risks due to poor quality, lack of sterilisation, and absence of regulation, leading to ineffective protection against pregnancy and STIs. Risks include breakage, infection, allergic reactions, and false security,” the alert cautioned.

The agency urged Nigerians to purchase only verified, quality-assured condoms from approved sources to safeguard their health and wellbeing.

“To ensure safety, only genuine, quality-assured condoms from approved manufacturers should be used,” NAFDAC advised.
