Mojtaba: It’s Going To Increase The Sense In The US That This War Was A Mistake —Barbara Slavin

According to a report by Al Jazeera, the Iran’s Assembly of Experts has moved to install Mojtaba Khamenei as the successor to his slain father, foreign policy analysts are warning that the move is a direct challenge to President Donald Trump’s authority.

The selection of the younger Khamenei long considered a hardline shadow figure within the IRGC threatens to further polarize a U.S. public already skeptical of the escalating conflict.

President Trump has been vocal in his opposition to a hereditary transition in Tehran, explicitly stating in recent media appearances that the United States would view Mojtaba Khamenei as an illegitimate leader.

Barbara Slavin, a distinguished fellow at the Stimson Center, characterized the selection as a deliberate act of geopolitical defiance by the Iranian clerical body.

“It’s a real finger in the eye to Donald Trump,” Slavin noted, pointing to the President’s previous assertions that he would not accept Mojtaba as the next supreme leader.

While the White House maintains a policy of “unconditional surrender” for the Iranian regime, domestic polling suggests that the American public is becoming increasingly wary of a prolonged engagement.

Slavin suggests that replacing one Khamenei with another particularly one with a reputation for brutality may be the breaking point for U.S. domestic support.

“The replacement of the elder Khamenei with his son would not be well received by a US public that polls show is already wary of the war,” Slavin explained.

The expansion of the war, which began with targeted strikes against the Iranian leadership, has led to a surge in regional instability and domestic economic concerns.

Slavin argues that if the end result of the war is simply a continuation of the Khamenei dynasty, the narrative of the conflict will shift toward failure.

“It’s going to increase the sense in the United States that this war was a mistake,” she added.

The White House has yet to issue a formal response to the reports of Mojtaba’s selection, but President Trump’s recent ultimatum that a leader without U.S. approval “is not going to last long” suggests that the military campaign may intensify rather than wind down.See_More…
