Ahead of Argentina’s final against Spain, the 39-year-old captain shared an image of his specially designed boots bearing the inscription “El Ultimo Tango” — translated as “The Last Tango.” The message, coupled with Adidas’ earlier confirmation that the tournament would be his final World Cup appearance, intensified discussions about a possible retirement from professional football.
Although Argentina fell 1-0 to Spain after Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in extra time, Messi once again delivered an outstanding tournament, finishing with eight goals and four assists. However, the Argentine icon also came under criticism for his conduct during the closing moments of the final.
