Many killed, others injured in fire outbreak at new year’s party

Several people have been killed and others injured following a fire that broke out during a New Year’s party at an Alpine ski resort in southern Switzerland, police said on Thursday.

The blaze occurred at about 1:30 a.m. at the Le Constellation lounge bar in Crans-Montana, according to Gaetan Lathion, spokesperson for police in the canton of Valais.

“There are several injuries and several fatalities,” Lathion said, without providing exact figures.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the fire or additional details surrounding the incident. Police said a press conference involving law enforcement and the regional public prosecutor would be held later in the morning.

Crans-Montana is one of Switzerland’s most exclusive holiday destinations, renowned for its luxury resorts, vibrant nightlife, and popular après-ski scene.

Located about 1,500 metres above sea level on a south-facing plateau in the Rhone Valley, the resort offers panoramic Alpine views stretching from the Matterhorn to Mont Blanc.
