Manchester United, Chelsea announce summer clear-out

The summer clear-out has officially begun.

As clubs across Europe prepare for another demanding campaign, two of the Premier League’s biggest names, Manchester United and Chelsea, have started reshaping their squads by confirming a series of departures ahead of the 2026/2027 season.

For some players, it marks the end of successful chapters. For others, it brings closure to careers that never quite unfolded as expected.

And perhaps no departure will attract more attention than that of Jadon Sancho, whose turbulent Manchester United journey has finally come to an end.

Sancho, Casemiro headline Manchester United exit list

Manchester United announced on Tuesday that six players will leave Old Trafford as free agents this summer, with Jadon Sancho, Casemiro, and Tyrell Malacia among the headline departures.

Academy prospects Sonny Aljofree, James Bailey, and Malachi Sharpe will also move on as the club continues its rebuilding process.

For many supporters, the biggest talking point is Sancho.

When the winger arrived from Borussia Dortmund in 2021, expectations were sky-high. Fans believed United had secured one of Europe’s most exciting young attackers.

Instead, his time at Old Trafford became a story of flashes of brilliance, inconsistency, managerial disputes, and multiple loan spells.

After making 83 appearances for the Red Devils, Sancho spent recent seasons away from Manchester, returning to Dortmund before subsequent loan moves to Chelsea and Aston Villa.

Now, the curtain officially falls on a transfer that once promised so much.

Casemiro leaves with silverware, respect

Unlike Sancho, Casemiro departs Old Trafford with his legacy largely intact.

The Brazilian midfielder arrived as a multiple Champions League winner and quickly became one of the team’s most influential figures.

Over four seasons, he featured in 160 matches, scored 26 goals, and helped United secure domestic silverware.

His commanding display and crucial goal in the 2023 Carabao Cup final against Newcastle remain among the standout moments of his United career.

The Brazilian captain also played an important role in the club’s 2024 FA Cup triumph.

In its farewell message, United paid tribute to the midfielder’s leadership, professionalism, and contribution during his stay in Manchester.

Malacia’s injury-stricken spell ends

Dutch defender Tyrell Malacia also leaves after a challenging spell heavily disrupted by injuries.

Signed in 2022, the full-back showed promise during his early appearances but struggled to maintain momentum due to recurring fitness setbacks.

Despite those difficulties, he still managed 50 first-team appearances and was part of the squad that lifted the Carabao Cup in 2023.

For many supporters, Malacia’s departure will be viewed as a case of unrealised potential rather than lack of ability.

Chelsea continue academy reshuffle

At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea have also begun trimming their squad by confirming the departure of four players following the publication of their retained and released list.

Brodi Hughes, Richard Olise, Jimi Tauriainen, and Sam Rak-Sakyi will all leave the club when their contracts expire at the end of June.

While none became established first-team stars, each player spent significant years developing within Chelsea’s famous academy system.

The end of long academy journeys

Defender Brodi Hughes departs after spending 13 years at Chelsea.

Having joined the club as an Under-8 player, he progressed through every level of the academy before gaining valuable senior experience on loan at AFC Wimbledon.

Richard Olise also leaves after a decade at Cobham.

The midfielder’s journey through Chelsea’s youth ranks earned him opportunities around the first-team environment, including involvement in the club’s UEFA Conference League campaign.

Meanwhile, England youth international Sam Rak-Sakyi exits after making four senior appearances, all of which came during Chelsea’s European campaign.

Finnish midfielder Jimi Tauriainen also departs after six years with the club, having previously been included in Chelsea’s matchday squad for major domestic fixtures.

Summer rebuilds gathering pace

With the transfer window gathering momentum, the departures signal the beginning of what could be a busy summer for both clubs.

Manchester United are expected to continue their squad overhaul as they look to return to title contention, while Chelsea remain focused on refining a youthful squad capable of competing across multiple competitions.

For the players leaving, new opportunities now await.

For the clubs, the message is clear: sentiment rarely survives the transfer window.

As preparations for the new season intensify, fresh faces are expected to arrive, old chapters are closing, and another Premier League rebuilding season is officially underway.
