Relief and renewed hope swept through Okuama community on Wednesday after a Federal High Court sitting in Warri ordered the unconditional release of Prof. Arthur Ekpekpo and other detained community leaders, ending months of anxiety for their families and supporters.
The court directed that the detainees be released immediately and without conditions, ruling during proceedings in a suit challenging their continued detention. The development sparked celebrations among residents, relatives and supporters who had closely followed the case.
For many families, the ruling was more than a legal victory. It was the prospect of reunion after a prolonged period of uncertainty linked to the aftermath of the Okuama crisis, which gained national attention following the killing of military personnel in the community in 2024.
Outside the courtroom, supporters expressed gratitude over the decision, describing it as a step towards healing and reconciliation in the troubled community.
The court, however, noted that the substantive matter remains before it and fixed July 13, 2026, for the continuation of hearing in the case.
Reacting to the ruling, human rights activist and advocate, Pastor Egedegbe, who also serves as secretary, Okuama community, commended the court for what he described as a courageous and just decision.
“We commend the court for standing on the side of justice. This ruling has restored hope to families and members of the Okuama community who have long awaited this moment,” he said.
Pastor Egedegbe urged residents and stakeholders to embrace peace and allow the judicial process to continue without rancour. “This is a time for healing, not division. We appeal to everyone to remain calm and peaceful as the case proceeds,” he added.
While legal proceedings continue, Wednesday’s ruling brought a moment of joy to Okuama, where many residents see the release order as a fresh opportunity to rebuild trust, pursue justice and begin the process of moving forward from a painful chapter in the community’s history.
