Kwankwaso set to join ADC Monday

Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Kano state governor, is set to formally defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday.

The move was disclosed by the Kwankwasiyya movement, which said the ceremony would take place in Kano, with Kwankwaso expected to be joined by several NNPP members.

The planned defection follows a recent visit by Rauf Aregbesola, the national secretary of the ADC, to Kwankwaso’s Abuja residence.

Kwankwaso confirmed the visit on his X page, though he did not disclose details of their discussions.

Speculation over Kwankwaso’s possible defection had gained traction on Sunday during the annual Kwankwasiyya Eid festival in Kano, where supporters repeatedly chanted Peter Obi, the former Anambra state governor and ex-Labour Party presidential candidate, in his presence.

Monday’s formal registration will mark Kwankwaso’s exit from the NNPP, a party he played a central role in building, and his entry into a new political chapter ahead of the 2027 elections.
