The management of Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, Kogi State, has rusticated two students over alleged involvement in gay practice.
In a statement issued on Friday by the university’s Information and Public Relations Unit, the institution said the disciplinary action was approved at the 31st Regular Meeting of the University Senate after it considered recommendations from the Students’ Disciplinary Committee.
The expulsion was carried out in line with the provisions of the Students’ Handbook (Second Edition, as amended in 2025).
The affected students were identified as Onumoko Hamza of the Biology Education Department and Abdulazeez Eneji of the Mining Engineering Department. However, the university did not disclose when or where the alleged offences were committed.
The management also approved the rustication of four other students for one academic session over their involvement in a brawl.
The students are Favour Akowe of the Microbiology Department, Simbiat Babamuharuna of the Biology Department, and Zainab Omayoza and Sukura Bukola, both of the Biochemistry Department.
Reaffirming its commitment to maintaining discipline and order, the university warned that it would not hesitate to take decisive disciplinary action against any student found guilty of violating its rules and regulations.
The report noted that same-sex relationships are illegal in Nigeria under the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, signed into law in January 2014 during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. The law prescribes a prison term of up to 14 years for anyone convicted of same-sex sexual acts.
The defendants pleaded not guilty, were granted bail, and the case was eventually struck out by a Federal High Court due to what the judge described as a lack of diligent prosecution by the police.
