King Charles III has formally clarified the status of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle following their recent return to the United Kingdom (UK), making clear that the couple will not resume their roles as working members of the Royal Family.
A letter issued on the King’s behalf by the Lord Chamberlain was circulated to senior government and military officials and other representatives to prevent what Buckingham Palace described as “doubt or confusion” over the Sussexes’ position.
TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports the letter confirms that Harry and Meghan remain non-working royals and are to be treated essentially as private citizens, despite relocating to Britain after several years in the United States.
It further states that their His Royal Highness (HRH) and Her Royal Highness (HRH) styles remain in abeyance and are not to be used. Their charitable activities will also continue to be regarded as private initiatives rather than royal engagements.
TNG reports the clarification is significant because Harry and Meghan’s return had generated speculation that they could potentially resume some form of royal role or become more closely involved with the institution.
However, the King’s directive makes clear that the arrangements established when the couple stepped back from royal duties in 2020 remain in place.
Operational security matters concerning the Sussexes are to be handled by the relevant police authorities, rather than automatically being treated as a Royal Family responsibility.
Questions involving official courtesies or the use of public funds are to be referred to Buckingham Palace.
The clarification comes amid heightened interest in the Sussexes’ return and speculation over whether their presence in Britain could create the perception of a parallel royal establishment.
In essence, Harry and Meghan may now live in the UK, but their return does not amount to a return to royal duty.
