Renowned journalist and defence analyst, Is’haq Modibbo Kawu, has expressed deep concern over the killings in Woro and Nuku communities of Kaiama Local Government Area in Kwara State.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Kawu described the attack as a major setback to Nigeria’s security and development efforts.
He said reports indicated that dozens of residents were killed by terrorists allegedly operating from the Kainji Lake National Park.
“The attackers reportedly stormed the communities in coordinated raids, killing residents and destroying homes,” he stated.
Kawu noted that victims included traditional leaders, religious figures, women, children, and students.
He cited Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq’s disclosure that at least 75 people were killed for resisting extremist teachings.
“At least 75 local Muslims were massacred in cold blood,” the governor said.
He also referenced the Presidency’s statement condemning the attack.
“The President expressed outrage that the victims rejected extremist ideology,” Kawu noted.
He welcomed the deployment of troops under “Operation Savannah Shield” but stressed the need for long-term reforms.
“National parks have become sanctuaries for non-state actors due to poor funding and weak policing,” he said.
Kawu also blamed rising inequality and unemployment for insecurity.
“Our society is producing frustrated young people who are easily recruited by violent groups,” he warned.
He urged the government to combine military action with social investment and economic reforms.
“If we do not build a just and caring society, tragedies like Kaiama will continue,” he concluded.
