Caleb Mutfwang, governor of Plateau state on Monday addressed residents from an armoured vehicle following a deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba.
He also announced a 48-hour curfew in Jos North Local Government Area.
The governor, who visited the scene of the Sunday night violence, assured residents that perpetrators would be apprehended and brought to justice, while government would cover medical expenses for the injured and organise burials for the deceased.
The attack, which occurred around 7:30 p.m. on March 29, 2026, has heightened tensions in the community, prompting increased security operations across the area.
In a video circulating online, Mutfwang was seen standing atop a bulletproof vehicle, appealing for calm among agitated youths and warning against reprisals.
Describing the incident as painful, the governor noted that Angwan Rukuba is a diverse community with residents from different ethnic backgrounds, adding that the tragedy affected all.
He said, “this is a painful thing for all of us. Angwan-Rukuba is a community that harbours every ethnic nationality in Plateau; I personally have relations that have lived in Angwan-Rukuba. Therefore, this is a pain to all of us.
“It is not just to a few people; I want to plead with you; please let us not take the laws into our hands, I beg you.”
He further disclosed that the President had been briefed on the development, stressing that security agencies were on top of the situation.
